Taiwan stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the Taiwan Weighted Index climbing 1.48% as gains in the Plastic, Chemical and Optoelectronic sectors offset declines in shipping. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 840 to 205, with 79 stocks unchanged.
PCL Technologies led sectoral gains, rising 10.00% to 170.50. ITEQ Corp advanced 10.00% to 583.00, reaching record levels, while Genius Electronic Optical gained 10.00% to close at 759.00.
On the downside, Yang Ming Marine Transport fell 9.43% to 57.60, Wan Hai Lines declined 9.09% to 115.00 and U-Ming Marine Transport dropped 7.69% to 72.00. The losses in shipping weighed on broader market sentiment despite the gains in technology-linked segments.
Commodities showed mixed movement, with October crude oil futures down 1.87% at $80.82 per barrel and November Brent crude falling 1.63% to $85.85. December gold futures edged up 0.05% to $4,696.91 per troy ounce. The Taiwan dollar held steady against the U.S. dollar at 31.85 and the Chinese yuan at 0.21.
