Melide, a small town on Lake Lugano, has become the site of a new luxury hospitality entry with the opening of Swiss Diamond Boutique Hotel La Romantica last year.
The 26-room and-suite five-star superior property embraces a boutique concept rather than the scale of a traditional luxury hotel. Architectural design, garden space and direct lake access define the offering.
Interiors feature cream and gray tones accented by Italian and Brazilian marble, custom furnishings and artwork, balancing modern aesthetics with Mediterranean ties to the canton of Ticino.
All rooms and suites include a private terrace or balcony with views across Lake Lugano and surrounding mountains. The lobby functions more as a lounge than a conventional reception hall, furnished with sofas and a small art library. Executive Chef Egidio Iadonisi leads the kitchen at Restaurant Le Rive and its terrace, serving Mediterranean and Ticino dishes with seasonal emphasis including turnip gnocchi, salt-crusted sea bass and braised veal cheek. The Velvet Bar offers cocktails and light fare.
The garden references vegetation around Monte San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring over 70 native plant varieties including columbine, cyclamen and geranium. An illuminated fountain with music provides an evening focal point contrasting the property's generally tranquil atmosphere.
Location advantages extend to a nearby ferry terminal, private boat dock and walking distance to Swissminiature.
Despite its modest room count, La Romantica features a notably extensive wellness area encompassing a hammam, Finnish and infrared saunas, a salt grotto, Turkish bath, whirlpool, treatment rooms, fitness and Pilates spaces and hydrotherapy. The outdoor pool directly faces the lake.
La Romantica is the smaller and younger of two Swiss Diamond Hotels Lake Lugano properties under general manager Canio Sabia. The sister property, Swiss Diamond Hotel in Vico Morcote, has operated for approximately 25 years and underwent renovation last spring.
The Vico Morcote hotel accommodates 87 rooms and suites, positioning it as a traditional resort and events venue. Its building sits directly on the lakefront with panoramic water and mountain views. Rooms range from roughly 20 square meters to spacious suites. Its wellness facility is larger and more classically designed, featuring columns, mosaics, frescoes, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool with intermittent live music and Sunday DJ sets.
Both restaurants fall under Iadonisi's direction. Restaurant Lago in Vico Morcote emphasizes Mediterranean cuisine with tapas and sharing dishes. The Orient Bar features a cigar lounge with English-Oriental interiors.
Vico Morcote targets events more aggressively: a sixth-floor panorama ballroom and adjacent rooftop terrace overlooking the lake serve weddings, corporate functions and private celebrations.
The two properties represent distinct approaches to the same location—La Romantica prioritizing intimate boutique experience and contemporary design, while Vico Morcote delivers the broader services of an established five-star resort. Both share the same defining advantage: direct lakeside positioning on Lake Lugano.
