Sonova’s Phonak brand has launched its next-generation hearing aids, leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance speech comprehension in loud and dynamic settings. The EON family introduces the Hypersonic chip, a proprietary processor designed to handle real-time AI computations, enabling the devices to filter speech from complex noise environments more effectively than previous models.
The new chip, paired with an updated neural network, delivers a 37% reduction in energy consumption compared with the prior Sphere generation. This efficiency translates into a 25% smaller and 20% lighter device, while battery life extends to up to 38 hours. Additional improvements include enhanced speech intelligibility and outdoor performance, with the WindBlock 2.0 feature reducing wind noise by up to 50 decibels to facilitate clearer conversations during activities such as walking, cycling or outdoor dining.
At the core of the technological upgrade is Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0, an AI system that isolates speech in real time even when multiple speakers are present from different directions. Sonova’s research and development head, Anders Rosengren, highlighted the system’s ability to double the likelihood of users understanding every word while reducing listening effort by up to 37%.
The company also introduced Auracast, a Bluetooth standard enabling direct access to public audio streams in venues such as theaters, churches, conference rooms and airports. While adoption depends on infrastructure upgrades by event organizers, Sonova views Auracast as a long-term technology rather than an immediate purchasing driver.
Sonova’s leadership emphasized the shift from traditional amplification devices to compact, specialized computing platforms worn at the ear. The company aims to optimize processing power to improve speech comprehension, reduce fatigue and support social engagement among users. With an estimated 1.5 billion people globally experiencing hearing loss, Sonova sees substantial growth potential, projecting the figure can rise to nearly 2.5 billion by 2050.
