Shares of SK hynix surged on Monday as investors bet on sustained demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence applications, lifting the South Korean semiconductor manufacturer’s stock despite broader volatility in the tech sector.
The company’s shares rose more than 4% in early trading, outpacing broader market gains in Seoul. The advance followed reports indicating strong demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are critical components in AI accelerators and data center servers. SK hynix is a key supplier of HBM chips to major tech firms, including Nvidia, which has driven its recent growth.
Analysts attributed the rally to expectations that AI infrastructure spending will remain robust through 2024, even as some segments of the semiconductor industry face cyclical downturns. Memory chip prices have shown signs of stabilization after a prolonged slump, further supporting investor confidence in SK hynix’s near-term prospects.
The surge in SK hynix’s stock comes amid a mixed performance in global equity markets, where technology shares have been volatile amid concerns over interest rate policies and economic growth. However, the company’s exposure to AI-driven demand has insulated it from broader sector headwinds.
SK hynix is scheduled to release its first-quarter earnings on April 25. Investors will be closely monitoring the report for updates on revenue, margins, and guidance amid shifting market dynamics.
