OpenAI reduced pricing for its frontier GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20% through its application programming interface, effective immediately. Input token costs fell to $4 per million from $5, while output token pricing declined to $20 per million from $30, according to the company’s Friday announcement.
The reductions apply for the next three months across eligible plans for credits on ChatGPT Work, an agentic AI product, and Codex, the coding tool. Mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model pricing was cut by 20%, while the lower-cost Luna model saw an 80% reduction. Subscriptions for Pro, Plus, and Business tiers remain unchanged.
The move follows price cuts introduced late last month for smaller models. OpenAI’s pricing adjustments come as competition intensifies from Anthropic and Chinese AI providers. Anthropic currently lists its Claude Fable 5 model at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, while Claude Opus 5 is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.
