Mexico's benchmark S&P/BMV IPC closed 2.14% higher on Friday, August 21, 2026, as gains in the Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services and Consumer Staples sectors offset declines in key retail names. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners 145 to 85, with 14 stocks unchanged at the close.
The S&P/BMV IPC, which tracks 35 of the exchange's most liquid stocks, rose to finish the session at a fresh high. Top contributors included Grupo Mexico, which surged 6.38% to 237.00, Industriales Penoles, up 5.70% at 935.07, and GCC, which added 5.25% to 201.52. The gains came as the broader Industrials segment led sector performance, reflecting strong demand for metals and construction materials.
Retail names lagged, with Walmart de Mexico falling 2.35% to 46.53, extending a five-year low. Qualitas Controladora and Coca-Cola Femsa also declined 1.32% and 1.21%, respectively, as investor appetite for consumer staples waned.
The Mexican peso strengthened modestly, with the USD/MXN pair down 0.17% to 16.92. The EUR/MXN cross fell 0.14% to 19.77, while the U.S. Dollar Index futures slipped 0.05% to 98.77.
Commodities showed mixed performance, with gold futures for December delivery up 1.97% to $4,661.60 per troy ounce. Crude oil futures for October delivery fell 0.22% to $86.64 per barrel, while Brent crude for October rose 0.16% to $93.93 per barrel.
