Ooma Inc. (NYSE: OOMA) announced the launch of StarDial, a home phone service designed specifically for customers who rely on SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet in rural and remote locations.
The offering includes a base station and cordless handset that connects to Starlink's broadband service. The hardware is priced at $129.99. Basic service carries no monthly fee beyond applicable taxes and charges.
The company also offers a Premier Service tier at $9.99 per month, plus taxes and fees, which expands coverage to include unlimited calling throughout North America and adds call blocking functionality.
Standard service features unlimited nationwide calling, address-based 911, caller ID, call waiting, and voicemail. Customers can generally port their existing phone numbers into the new service.
StarDial incorporates Ooma's PureVoice technology and Adaptive Redundancy features, which the company says help maintain voice quality during fluctuations in internet connectivity—an important consideration for satellite-based broadband.
The service is intended for use at primary residences, vacation homes, RVs, and boats equipped with Starlink internet. Setup involves connecting the device to a Starlink Wi-Fi network and pairing the handset with the base station, a process Ooma estimates takes approximately 15 minutes without requiring professional installation.
Ooma reports serving more than 2 million users. The company clarified that StarDial is not affiliated with or endorsed by SpaceX or Starlink.
"Millions of consumers now rely on Starlink to stay connected in places that can be difficult to reach with traditional internet and cellular service, and they deserve a simple and affordable home phone option," said Jim Gustke, senior vice president of marketing at Ooma.
