A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck eastern Papua New Guinea on Thursday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, GFZ data showed. The temblor’s epicenter was located in a remote region of the country, where seismic activity is relatively common due to the region’s tectonic setting.
The GFZ registered the event at 17:43 local time and updated the details at 17:49. No immediate tsunami warning was issued following the quake, and there were no initial reports of damage or casualties.
Papua New Guinea sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
