Lam Research Corp. initiated construction on a $3 billion global lab network expansion, with the first phase—a 120,000 square-foot research and development facility in Tualatin, Oregon—set to open in 2028.
The new lab will increase cleanroom capacity at the Tualatin campus by over 50%, focusing on advanced deposition and etch process development, materials science, and hardware validation. The facility is part of a multi-building project representing Lam’s largest investment in Oregon to date.
During the three-year construction period, the project is expected to generate $500 million in economic output and create approximately 900 jobs. Upon completion, the expansion will support more than 400 new Lam Research positions and contribute over $1.8 billion annually to Oregon’s economy, according to company estimates.
U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, and Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read joined Lam executives for the groundbreaking ceremony. Sesha Varadarajan, Lam’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the facility’s role in deepening specialized capabilities and strengthening collaboration with customers within the company’s global lab network.
The investment aligns with Lam’s broader strategy to expand its R&D footprint amid rising demand for semiconductor manufacturing technologies. The Tualatin campus serves as a key hub for process innovation, complementing the company’s existing operations in Oregon.
