Indian equities closed lower on Wednesday, with the Nifty 50 index falling 0.52% to 24,892.25, while the BSE Sensex 30 declined 0.24% to 81,250.65. Declines were led by weakness in the S&P BSE Teck, BSE IT and non-durable consumer goods sectors, offsetting gains in select financial and cement names.
The India VIX, a gauge of market volatility, dropped 4.40% to 10.59, marking its lowest level in six months. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 1,438 to 1,150 on the National Stock Exchange, with 43 stocks ending unchanged. On the Bombay Stock Exchange, advancers led by 2,206 to 1,850, with 175 unchanged.
Among Nifty 50 components, Kotak Mahindra Bank gained 3.70% to 416.45, while UltraTech Cement rose 2.04% to 11,775. Axis Bank added 1.69% to 1,255.90. Losses were led by Infosys, which fell 1.84% to 1,122.90, followed by Power Grid Corporation of India at 266.20, down 1.77%, and Bharti Airtel at 1,913.90, down 1.70%. Nestlé India declined 1.89% to 1,451.00.
Commodities retreated as gold futures for December delivery fell 0.49% to $4,671.51 per troy ounce. Crude oil prices declined, with October WTI futures down 2.63% to $80.19 per barrel and November Brent futures down 2.60% to $85.00 per barrel. The US Dollar Index futures slipped 0.11% to 98.95.
The Indian rupee strengthened 0.19% against the dollar to 95.23, while the euro fell 0.10% to 111.29 against the rupee.
