India’s economy grew 7.8% in the first quarter of the fiscal year, the government reported on Monday, marking a deceleration from the revised 8.6% expansion recorded in the preceding three months.
The slowdown reflects moderating momentum following a strong post-pandemic rebound, with the April-June period’s growth rate trailing expectations amid mixed signals in domestic demand and external trade. The latest figures underscore a gradual normalization after last year’s sharp recovery, though the pace remains robust relative to historical averages.
The data, released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, aligns with projections from private forecasters who had anticipated a sequential cooling after the first quarter’s outperformance. Analysts cited base effects, uneven monsoon rainfall, and softer manufacturing activity as contributing factors to the moderation.
