EHang Holdings said on Friday it had completed the first public demonstration flight of its autonomous electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Hong Kong, marking a milestone in the city’s low-altitude economy initiative.
The flight, performed by the EH216-S model, included vertical takeoff and landing, low-altitude cruising, and hovering along pre-programmed routes. The demonstration at Cyberport took place from Friday through Sunday, following a series of validation flights that began in mid-August.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China has issued EHang’s EH216-S with a Type Certificate, Production Certificate, and Standard Airworthiness Certificate, enabling the public flights under controlled conditions. The aircraft operates without a pilot on board, relying on autonomous systems for navigation and flight control.
Hong Kong’s government has prioritized the development of a low-altitude economy, with 33 pilot projects now underway since the first half of 2026. Of these, four involve unconventional aircraft, including EHang’s eVTOL model. The city’s authorities aim to establish a regulatory framework for such aircraft by 2027, when a draft bill on unconventional aviation is expected to be finalized.
Michael Wong, Deputy Financial Secretary and Head of the Working Group on Low-Altitude Economy Development, said the flight represented an important step for Hong Kong’s aviation sector. Mable Chan, Secretary for Transport and Logistics, and Clara Wong, Director-General of Civil Aviation, also attended the event.
EHang’s shares were trading at $4.49 in U.S. pre-market activity on Friday, down 0.44% from the previous close. After-hours trading showed a marginal gain to $4.50, up 0.23%.
The demonstration follows broader efforts to integrate autonomous aviation into urban mobility, with Hong Kong positioning itself as a testbed for next-generation air transport solutions.
