NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, nine months ahead of schedule. The $4 billion mission will operate from Lagrange Point 2, positioned about 1 million miles from Earth, for an initial five-year survey with potential for an additional five years based on fuel reserves.
The observatory is designed to survey more than two billion galaxies, providing data on the universe’s expansion and the roles of dark energy and dark matter. Dark energy accounts for roughly 68% of the universe’s contents, dark matter about 27%, and ordinary matter—including stars, planets and gas—just 5%, according to current cosmological models.
Roman’s capabilities include a wide-field view that enables rapid sky surveys. Nicola Fox, NASA’s Science Mission Directorate chief, described the telescope as complementing existing observatories: it will offer a broader perspective than the James Webb Space Telescope, which focuses on deep, narrow-field observations, while matching Hubble’s sensitivity and resolution but covering far larger areas. Julie McEnery, Roman’s senior project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, noted that Roman could survey the entire Milky Way galaxy in one month, a task that would require about a century with Hubble.
The mission’s primary objectives include mapping the distribution of dark matter, studying the universe’s large-scale structure, and investigating the acceleration of cosmic expansion discovered in 1998. Mustapha Ishak, a cosmologist at the University of Texas at Dallas and member of Roman’s scientific collaboration, highlighted the telescope’s potential for unexpected discoveries, citing historical precedents where major observatories yielded breakthroughs beyond initial expectations.
