Coinbase’s stock surged 6.88% in early trading on Wednesday, reaching an intraday high of $188.10 as optimism over regulatory clarity for digital assets lifted shares to $187.11. The advance followed the previous session’s close at $174.96, extending gains tied to expectations that the U.S. Senate may approve the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in September.
Analyst Ramsey El-Assal at Cantor Fitzgerald raised the price target for Coinbase from $184 to $212 while maintaining an above-average rating. The upgrade reflects growing confidence in the company’s regulatory positioning and market outlook as legislative momentum builds.
The stock’s movement coincided with a stabilization in Bitcoin, which traded above $77,500 last week and recorded net inflows into exchange-traded funds on September 2, according to data showing the cryptocurrency at $77,622.00 (+1.10%). Coinbase’s high sensitivity to crypto prices and trading volumes amplified the upward momentum.
Governance developments also supported sentiment. Anthony Armstrong, a former CFO of xAI and X Corp with nearly a decade at Morgan Stanley, joined Coinbase’s board of directors on September 1, a move interpreted as a step toward greater institutional credibility.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act could advance in the Senate this month, citing progress in establishing federal oversight for digital asset markets. The bill aims to clarify rules for financial institutions engaging in crypto-related activities, including payments, lending, custody, and trading.
Broader market conditions contributed to the rally, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posting modest gains. Coinbase’s stock, which has historically tracked crypto price swings, benefited from the improved risk appetite and Bitcoin’s resilience above key levels.
