CIA Director John Ratcliffe met with Russian intelligence officials during a two-day visit to Moscow on Tuesday, the Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday.
Ratcliffe did not hold discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, though the Kremlin stated that Putin was briefed on the outcome of the talks without delay. The meetings took place against a backdrop of heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and stalled negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to disclose the topics addressed during the meetings or provide further details. He emphasized that intelligence service contacts between the two countries persist even during periods of severe bilateral strain, noting that such interactions are not unprecedented.
Peskov added that while these exchanges may help stabilize relations, it remains premature to assess whether they will meaningfully improve the current crisis in U.S.-Russia ties. He reiterated that Putin has previously acknowledged the continuation of such contacts despite broader diplomatic challenges.
The visit follows a period of heightened geopolitical friction, with no immediate signs of a broader thaw in relations between the two nations.
