Capella University has appointed Dr. Saro Sarkisian to its Board of Trustees, effective August 2026.
Dr. Sarkisian, a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist, currently serves as Clinical Director of Cellular Therapeutics at Frederick Health and practices at the James M. Stockman Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland. His appointment adds clinical oncology and healthcare administration expertise to the university's governance structure.
Educated at the University of Aleppo in Syria, Dr. Sarkisian completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and his hematology and medical oncology fellowship at Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute in Pennsylvania. He also holds a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Capella University, which he earned while practicing medicine.
Professionally, Dr. Sarkisian has led clinical trials and advised on the development of immuno-oncology therapeutics. He holds distinction as the first U.S. physician certified to administer tumor treating fields therapy for patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. In 2026, he was recognized as Physician of the Year by the Daily Record's Health Care Heroes program.
Capella University, an online institution serving working adults, was founded in 1993 and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The Board of Trustees oversees institutional compliance with regulatory and constituent requirements.
