Canadian equities advanced on Wednesday, with the S&P/TSX Composite Index closing 0.74% higher in Toronto.
Gains were broad-based, with the materials, healthcare and financials sectors contributing to the advance. Advancing stocks outnumbered decliners 630 to 350, while 68 issues ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, a measure of expected volatility for the index, fell 3.27% to 13.59, while U.S. dollar futures rose 0.11% to 99.52. The Canadian dollar held steady against the U.S. dollar at 0.72, with the CAD/USD rate unchanged at 0.37%.
Among top gainers, Endeavour Silver Corp rose 8.15% to C$15.40, AbraSilver Resource Corp added 7.49% to C$15.79 and G Mining Ventures Corp advanced 7.22% to C$52.55. Decliners included Celestica Inc, which fell 5.62% to C$384.25, BlackBerry Ltd, down 3.13% to C$10.54, and Descartes Systems Group Inc, which declined 2.85% to C$108.53.
Commodities also moved higher, with December gold futures rising 0.83% to $4,432.96 per troy ounce. October crude oil futures advanced 0.47% to $90.64 per barrel, while November Brent crude futures climbed 0.62% to $95.24 per barrel.
