Canada’s benchmark S&P/TSX Composite advanced 0.26% at the close of trading on Monday, lifted by gains in materials, healthcare and real estate investment trusts.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by 521 to 429 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with 79 stocks unchanged. The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which tracks implied volatility for the index’s options, fell 0.59% to 13.48, reflecting reduced near-term risk expectations.
Gold miners led the advance, with Seabridge Gold up 10.48% to C$45.86, followed by NovaGold Resources at C$12.95, up 7.74%, and I-80 Gold at C$2.66, gaining 6.83%. The gains came as December gold futures rose 0.55% to $4,706.16 per troy ounce, nearing record territory.
Energy and industrial names lagged, with Linamar down 8.34% to C$99.62, Magna International falling 6.56% to C$93.85 and BRP shedding 5.94% to C$88.25. Crude oil futures retreated, with October WTI down 2.46% to $84.92 per barrel and November Brent down 2.53% to $90.33.
The Canadian dollar held steady against the U.S. dollar, last trading at 0.72, while the ICE U.S. Dollar Index rose 0.20% to 98.93.
