Canada’s equity market closed higher on Tuesday, with the S&P/TSX Composite gaining 0.66% to set a new record at the close in Toronto.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 505 to 440, with 83 stocks unchanged. The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures implied volatility for the index’s options, fell 4.30% to 12.90, marking the lowest level in one month.
Financials, Materials and Information Technology were the primary drivers of the gains. Energy Fuels Inc. led advancers among constituents, rising 7.13% to 22.09. Bank of Nova Scotia added 7.02% to 128.73, while Southern Cross Gold Consolidated Ltd climbed 6.48% to 12.98.
On the downside, Imperial Oil Ltd fell 4.20% to 181.84, Cenovus Energy Inc declined 3.97% to 42.80 and Thomson Reuters Corp dropped 3.97% to 144.24.
Commodities showed mixed signals. December gold futures rose 0.46% to $4,719.21 per troy ounce. In contrast, October crude oil futures fell 5.16% to $80.62 per barrel, while the November Brent contract declined 5.59% to $85.48 per barrel.
Currency movements against the Canadian dollar were subdued. The CAD/USD rate held at 0.72, reflecting a 0.08% change, while the CAD/EUR rate remained flat at 0.62, with a 0.04% change. The U.S. Dollar Index futures were down 0.11% at 98.82.
