Brazilian beef exporters are set to benefit from a temporary expansion of U.S. import quotas starting September 1, a move expected to ease pressure from Chinese tariffs and quota constraints. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a 90-day increase of 300,000 tons to its lean beef import quota, distributed in three monthly installments of 100,000 tons each.
The quota expansion targets lean beef, including trimmings primarily used for ground meat production, under reduced tariff conditions. Paulo Mustefaga, CEO of the Brazilian Association of Cold Storage (Abrafrigo), stated the measure would help mitigate the impact of depleted export quotas to China and rising trade barriers affecting Brazilian beef shipments.
China remains Brazil’s largest beef importer, while the United States ranks as the second-largest destination for Brazilian beef exports. The temporary quota expansion provides an additional outlet for Brazilian producers amid heightened trade friction and quota limitations in key markets.
