Brazil’s government has filed a civil collective moral damages lawsuit against Discord, alleging the chat platform failed to comply with laws designed to protect children and women.
The lawsuit, brought by the Brazilian solicitor general Jorge Messias, seeks 500 million reais ($97 million) in damages. The claim was filed on Wednesday and targets Discord’s alleged shortcomings in safeguarding users under local regulations.
The legal action follows broader scrutiny of digital platforms’ compliance with child protection statutes in Brazil. Authorities did not specify additional details regarding the alleged violations or the evidence underpinning the lawsuit. Discord has not publicly responded to the allegations as of the filing date.
