Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone is forecast to ship more than 10 million units in its first year, according to market research firm IDC. The device, expected to launch in September, is priced at an estimated $2,500, positioning it as a premium offering within the foldable smartphone segment.
IDC projects Apple will capture 40% of all foldable smartphone shipments by 2027, reflecting strong early adoption despite the high price point. The research firm expects the foldable category to grow 12.6% this year and 18% in 2025, outpacing the broader smartphone market, which is facing a 16.7% decline in 2024.
The overall smartphone market, which exceeds 1 billion units annually, has seen downward revisions in forecasts, underscoring shifting consumer demand and pricing pressures. IDC senior research director Nabila Popal noted that the high price tag targets an elite consumer base likely to drive initial demand. Analyst Francisco Jeronimo added that component shortages, particularly those enabling AI features, are pushing costs higher, signaling the end of low-cost smartphones.
Samsung Electronics pioneered the foldable smartphone category seven years ago, and Apple’s entry is expected to intensify competition in the premium segment. The launch timing aligns with a period of structural challenges for the broader mobile industry, where pricing power and innovation are becoming key differentiators.
