Anthropic has agreed to a six-year, $45 billion cloud computing deal with Nscale to lease AI infrastructure at the latter’s Monarch campus in West Virginia. The arrangement covers the first of three planned buildings, providing approximately 460 megawatts of power—enough to supply roughly 345,000 U.S. homes at peak demand.
The full Monarch campus is projected to reach 1.35 gigawatts of capacity upon completion, with total development costs estimated at $71 billion. Of that, $47 billion is earmarked for AI-specific hardware, including Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin chips. These chips are expected to begin deployment late next year, according to the report.
The West Virginia facility represents a significant expansion of Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure commitments. The company has also secured a $50 billion agreement with Fluidstack, a $10 billion deal with Volta Infra Holdings Ltd., and a $45 billion pact with SpaceX. Anthropic’s valuation reached $965 billion in May, reflecting heightened demand for AI workloads.
Nscale, a London-based developer, is advancing plans for an initial public offering as early as next month. The company had previously signed a letter of intent with Microsoft for the West Virginia site in March but terminated discussions over the summer. Servers at the remaining campus buildings are slated to come online in 2028, further scaling Anthropic’s AI capacity.
Anthropic, creator of the Claude AI assistant, will rely on Nvidia’s hardware to meet its performance requirements. The deal underscores the accelerating race among AI firms to secure specialized cloud and computing resources amid surging demand for generative AI services.
