Alphatec Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: ATEC) named Thomas Carls executive vice president of data intelligence and strategy, effective immediately. Carls will join the company’s senior leadership team and report to chairman and CEO Pat Miles.
Carls brings more than three decades of experience in spine and medical technology. Most recently he served as vice president of product and clinical at Proprio Vision, working on an AI-enabled surgical navigation platform. Prior to that, he held executive roles across engineering, product development, marketing and global R&D at Sofamor Danek and Medtronic.
In his new position, Carls will oversee development and marketing for EOSedge and EOS Insight, as well as the firm’s data acquisition and analytics efforts and its InformatiX strategy.
He holds more than 80 patents and earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tulane University and an MBA from the University of Memphis.

Alphatec describes its procedural ecosystem as encompassing EOS imaging, EOS Insight, surgical planning, Valence navigation and robotics, SafeOp neuromonitoring and patient-specific solutions. The company manufactures devices for spine surgery through subsidiaries including Alphatec Spine Inc., EOS imaging S.A.S. and SafeOp Surgical Inc.
