German energy group Uniper has sold its 20-percent stake in the Opal gas pipeline to the investor Hy24, the company said Monday.
The transaction covers 100 percent of the shares held in Lubmin-Brandov Assets, the holding that owned the pipeline stake. The remaining 80 percent of Opal stays with GASCADE Gastransport.
Uniper said the sale fulfils one of the conditions attached by the European Union when it took over the company during its 2022 nationalisation.
Hy24 said it plans to use the pipeline to accelerate the build-out of a hydrogen economy in Europe. The Opal corridor runs approximately 470 kilometres from Lubmin on Germany's Baltic coast to Brandov in the Czech Republic and is among the largest gas transport routes on the continent.
Under a separate plan, the northern section of the pipeline was converted in mid-December 2025 for transport of hydrogen as part of Germany's core hydrogen network. The southern section is expected to follow by the end of 2030.
