Trump approval rises from record low as Democrats widen lead

A Reuters/Ipsos poll published Monday shows US President Donald Trump's approval rating has recovered slightly from a record low, while Democrats have widened their lead ahead of the November congressional elections.

The survey found that 44% of voters would support Democratic candidates, compared with 37% for Trump's Republican Party. The seven-point gap is the largest since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. The poll also showed Republicans losing their long-standing edge on economic competence: 38% of respondents said Democrats were more capable on economic issues, compared with 37% for Republicans.

Trump's personal approval rating rose to 35% after falling to 33% at the end of August, the lowest point of his political career. His popularity has declined since the start of the war with Iran in February, a conflict that has disrupted oil shipments from the Middle East and pushed fuel prices higher, straining US household finances.

If Republicans lose control of either chamber of Congress in the November midterms, the result could significantly complicate Trump's political agenda during the final two years of his term.
