Google DeepMind Researcher Warns AI May 'Kill Us All' in Exit Note

A former research engineer at Google DeepMind has warned that artificial intelligence could kill humanity, saying he believes the risk is real and that time may be running out to avoid it.

Bilal Chughtai, who recently resigned from Google DeepMind, made the comments on X and LinkedIn. He said he earnestly believes AI has the potential to kill us all and that superintelligent systems far exceeding human capabilities could emerge in the next few years and prove dangerous.

His warning follows a recent departure from another major AI lab. Jacob Coxon, an Anthropic researcher, announced his resignation last week, in part because of potential dangers posed by AI.

The comments also come as Anthropic head Dario Amodei published an essay over the weekend calling for more regulation of AI models and a slower pace of development. Elon Musk of xAI and Sam Altman of OpenAI immediately endorsed the proposal.

Altman said OpenAI is postponing its initial public offering beyond 2026 because of AI safety and regulation concerns.

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States already has guardrails in place to regulate AI companies. He also called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during a summit in Los Angeles to promote building data centers.
