German government officials are now open to the possibility of selling state-owned shares in Commerzbank to Italy’s UniCredit, according to Bloomberg.

The potential transaction would mark a significant shift in Germany’s approach to its financial sector holdings. The government currently holds a 15.6% stake in Commerzbank, acquired during the 2008 financial crisis to stabilize the lender. UniCredit, Italy’s largest bank by assets, has not publicly commented on the matter.

The move comes amid broader discussions about European banking consolidation, particularly as lenders seek to enhance competitiveness against larger U.S. rivals. UniCredit has previously pursued cross-border acquisitions, including a failed attempt to merge with Germany’s Deutsche Bank in 2019.

Analysts suggest that a sale could face regulatory scrutiny, given the strategic importance of Commerzbank in Germany’s financial system. The bank operates as the country’s second-largest lender, with a strong presence in corporate and retail banking.

The German government has not confirmed or denied the reports. A decision on the matter is not expected imminently, as officials weigh the economic and geopolitical implications of such a deal.
