U.S. regulators sue Goliath Ventures over $400M crypto fraud

U.S. regulators have filed lawsuits against Goliath Ventures, accusing the firm of operating a $400 million cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) allege that Goliath promised investors high returns from cryptocurrency liquidity pools but instead used the funds to pay earlier investors and cover the founder’s personal expenses, including luxury purchases.

According to the complaints, the scheme operated from at least 2021 until its collapse in 2023, when regulators intervened. Investors were reportedly lured by promises of substantial returns from crypto-related investments, but the firm failed to generate legitimate revenue or deliver on its commitments.

The SEC’s complaint, filed in a federal court, seeks permanent injunctions, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, and civil penalties. The CFTC’s lawsuit similarly requests restitution for defrauded investors, civil monetary penalties, and trading bans.

Goliath Ventures, founded by [Founder’s Name], marketed itself as a high-yield investment platform specializing in cryptocurrency liquidity pools. The firm attracted significant capital by offering returns that were unsustainably high, a common red flag in Ponzi schemes.

Regulators emphasized that the case underscores the ongoing risks of fraud in the cryptocurrency sector, particularly in unregulated or lightly supervised investment schemes. The lawsuits follow a broader crackdown on fraudulent crypto operations by U.S. authorities in recent years.

The SEC and CFTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the ongoing litigation.
