Norsk Hydro shares drop after Brazil alumina plant disruption
Brazilian operations at Norsk Hydro’s alumina plant face disruption, weighing on shares amid supply chain concerns.

Shares in Norsk Hydro fell on Monday after operations at its alumina plant in Brazil were disrupted, raising concerns over supply chain impacts and potential production delays.
The Norwegian metals and renewable energy company, which operates the Alunorte alumina refinery in northern Brazil, did not immediately provide details on the nature or extent of the disruption. Alunorte is one of the world’s largest alumina refineries, producing roughly 6.3 million tonnes annually and supplying key raw materials for aluminum production.
The disruption comes amid broader scrutiny of industrial operations in Brazil, where regulatory and environmental factors have occasionally affected production timelines. Norsk Hydro, which derives a significant portion of its revenue from aluminum and alumina, has previously cited operational challenges in the region as a risk factor in its financial disclosures.
Analysts noted that any prolonged halt or reduction in output at Alunorte could tighten global alumina supply, potentially lifting prices for the intermediate product used in aluminum smelting. Aluminum prices have shown volatility in recent months amid shifting demand dynamics and energy cost fluctuations.
Norsk Hydro’s shares were down 2.3% at 10:30 GMT, underperforming a broadly flat European metals and mining sector. The company’s market capitalization stood at approximately $14.2 billion at the close of trading on Friday.
A spokesperson for Norsk Hydro declined to comment on the operational specifics or timeline for resolving the disruption. The company is expected to provide further updates in its next earnings report, scheduled for release on October 26.
