Iridium, Deutsche Telekom Demo Satellite Voice for IoT Applications

Iridium Communications Inc. and Deutsche Telekom IoT have demonstrated a satellite-based voice messaging service using narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology, marking a step toward commercializing Iridium’s Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) network for voice communications. The test, conducted during Telekom Satellite Day 2026, involved a Toyota vehicle equipped with a Nordic Semiconductor development board and a Deutsche Telekom IoT SIM card transmitting the message “testing, testing, one, two, freeway” via Iridium’s L-band satellite constellation. The demonstration leverages Iridium’s existing LEO satellite infrastructure, ensuring global coverage without reliance on terrestrial networks. This follows the completion of a technical integration and global roaming agreement between Iridium and Deutsche Telekom IoT, enabling eligible customers to roam between terrestrial and satellite networks. Selected European testers are already using Deutsche Telekom’s Global SIM on the Iridium network, with commercial availability of Iridium NTN Direct scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. The service is powered by Fraunhofer IIS’s AI-based NESC Voice Codec, which supports bitrates of 1 kb/s or less, ensuring reliable, natural-sounding voice transmission at scale. The partnership aligns with Deutsche Telekom’s broader ‘network of networks’ strategy, expanding IoT applications in automotive, logistics, remote utilities, smart agriculture, and emergency response—areas where terrestrial coverage remains limited.
