U.S. equity positioning has weakened over the past week as investor flows shifted from accumulation to long liquidation and new short positions, according to Citi strategists. The reversal has reduced gross exposure and eroded previous momentum support across major U.S. indices, with the Nasdaq experiencing the most pronounced decline and both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq drifting back toward neutral levels.

Aggregate positioning remains constructive, but declining gross exposure signals reduced investor participation. The Russell 2000 stands out as an exception, with long exposure holding near three-year highs. Strategists cautioned that profit-taking risks could rise if bearish momentum persists.

In Europe, positioning remains stronger relative to other developed markets, described as "moderately bullish and well above neutral levels." Recent flows have been driven by new short positions in the EuroStoxx and DAX, alongside increased long unwinds in European banks and the FTSE. Germany’s DAX faces a tactical risk as profitable long positions coexist with deeply loss-making short positions, creating asymmetric flow dynamics.

Positioning in Asia shows mixed signals. Korea’s KOSPI reflects a mix of flows, including short-covering activity rather than outright bullish conviction. Both the Nikkei and KOSPI feature relatively large offside short positions, which could introduce squeeze-driven volatility risks.

Citi’s analysis follows a period of elevated U.S. market optimism, with the S&P 500 posting strong gains since November 2023. The Tech Titans strategy within InvestingPro has outperformed the index by more than doubling during this period, citing past winners such as Siemens Energy (+231.5%) and Sandisk (+189%).

Strategists noted that the current setup "leaves an ongoing risk of heightened volatility through either short squeezes or accelerated profit-taking activity," adding that the transition toward a more selective and fragile risk environment increases uncertainty for investors.
