CME Group to launch GPU compute futures contracts in October
Chicago-based exchange operator to introduce new derivatives tied to graphics processing unit computing power, expanding into high-performance computing markets.

CME Group Inc. said on Monday it will launch futures contracts tied to graphics processing unit (GPU) compute capacity in October, marking the exchange’s first foray into derivatives linked to high-performance computing (HPC) resources.
The new contracts will reference GPU compute power measured in units of 1,000 GPU hours, providing a standardized benchmark for the trading of computational resources used in artificial intelligence, machine learning and other data-intensive applications. CME said the contracts are designed to offer market participants a hedging tool for volatility in GPU pricing and availability, which has surged alongside demand for AI workloads.
The launch follows growing interest from hedge funds, technology firms and data centers in managing exposure to GPU costs, particularly amid supply constraints and price fluctuations in the semiconductor market. CME’s move reflects broader efforts by derivatives exchanges to expand into emerging asset classes tied to digital infrastructure and computational resources.
The contracts will be cash-settled based on a benchmark rate derived from industry data on GPU compute pricing, CME said. Trading is scheduled to begin on Oct. 14, with the first contracts expiring in December. The exchange did not disclose specific contract specifications beyond the unit of measure and settlement terms.
CME Group, the world’s largest derivatives marketplace, has expanded its product suite in recent years to include futures tied to carbon credits, weather and even cryptocurrency derivatives. The GPU compute contracts represent another step in diversifying its offerings beyond traditional financial and commodity derivatives.
