The development of artificial‑intelligence technologies is currently concentrated among a small group of firms. Leading U.S. companies include OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, while Chinese players comprise DeepSeek, Z.ai and Moonshot.
United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres called in July for coordinated regulation, noting that AI can reshape economies, alter labour markets, influence elections and shift security dynamics faster than any stakeholder can keep pace.
The UN’s concerns echo earlier warnings from Pope Leo, who issued an encyclical in May highlighting the moral and societal dangers of AI. OpenAI chief Sam Altman has also cautioned that unchecked AI could lead to humanity's extinction.
These statements underscore growing calls for international frameworks to manage the rapid deployment of AI systems and mitigate potential threats to global stability.
