Ukraine launched its largest-ever drone attack on Moscow overnight Sunday, striking an oil refinery in the city’s southeast and a residential building, Ukrainian officials said. The assault, which also employed domestically made Flamingo and Pelican missiles alongside FP-1 and RZ-100 systems, coincided with the third and final day of Russia’s first wartime parliamentary election.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the wave of drones as the "largest ever" attack on the Russian capital and called it an "unprecedented attack" aimed at disrupting the elections. "The enemy failed in this regard," he said. Sobyanin stated that 450 drones were destroyed en route to Moscow.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the targets overnight, saying: "Our long-range responses had a very significant impact in the Moscow region last night. One of Russia's key oil industry facilities and the aggressor's logistics facility were hit. These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine."
The wider Moscow region reported two killed — a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman — and 20 wounded, according to regional governor Andrei Vorobyov. Russia's defense ministry claimed to have shot down 1,110 Ukrainian drones across Russia, the annexed Crimean peninsula, and Black Sea waters overnight. Ukraine fired more than 1,000 drones at Russia overall, with hundreds aimed at Moscow.
Separate attacks marked the ongoing cross-border violence. A Russian drone strike on Saturday hit a monastery in Ukraine's Kherson region, killing a member of the clergy and wounding four others. That same evening, a Russian attack on Kyiv killed three children and their mother. In a Russian-occupied area of Kherson region, a Ukrainian attack killed a member of a local electoral committee, according to Kyiv regional administration head Tymur Tkachenko.
The attacks unfold along a 1,250-kilometer (780-mile) front line stretching across eastern and southern Ukraine, where both sides continue to target critical infrastructure as the conflict enters a new phase.
