Tesla Inc. will unveil its long-delayed next-generation Roadster on October 1, CEO Elon Musk confirmed late Thursday, sending shares of the company higher.
Musk replied to a social media post with the message "New Tesla Roadster Unveil 10.01," and Tesla posted "Go for launch" on X. The announcement follows a report earlier this year by The Information that the automaker had been preparing for the reveal.
Tesla first introduced the next-generation Roadster at aNovember 2017 event, promising deliveries by 2020. The project has undergone significant changes since then. Tesla originally explored a version built around components from its Model S Plaid but ultimately abandoned that approach in favor of developing an entirely new carbon-fiber hypercar platform.
A limited-edition version of the Roadster may include a demonstration of cold-gas thrusters developed in collaboration with SpaceX, Musk’s spaceflight company. That demonstration is expected to take place at SpaceX’s testing facility in McGregor, Texas.
The Roadster reveal comes as Tesla expands its autonomous-vehicle push in other areas. The company recently began offering rides in its two-seat Cybercab, which lacks a steering wheel or pedals, in limited areas of Austin, Texas.
