Target’s strategic focus on groceries is yielding measurable results, with food and beverage sales climbing 7% in the quarter ended August 1, while overall store traffic increased 3.6%. The retailer’s snack category led growth at 15%, underscoring the appeal of higher-margin food items in driving footfall.
The expansion of private-label food and beverage products—including 400 items under the Good & Gather brand—is a central pillar of the strategy. Target plans to add roughly 600 such products over the next two years, aiming to generate over $2 billion in incremental revenue in the coming years. Nearly $1 billion in tariff refunds has provided additional financial flexibility to support these initiatives.
Despite progress, groceries remain a modest contributor to Target’s overall sales mix. Food and beverages account for less than a quarter of merchandise sales, compared with 59% at Walmart, which holds a 27% share of the U.S. grocery market. Target’s share currently stands at about 5%, trailing far behind the retail giant. Analysts emphasize the importance of converting grocery shoppers into broader store visitors to maximize the strategy’s impact.
Michael Fiddelke, Target’s new CEO, has prioritized food as a key traffic driver, with Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester stating the goal is to "make food a destination, not simply a category guests shop while they're in our stores." Sarah Henry, managing director at Target shareholder Logan Capital Management, described grocery purchases as "mission-critical," noting they encourage more frequent store visits than discretionary spending.
Not all categories are performing equally. Hardlines, including the Fun 101 line, surged 10.6%, while beauty sales rose about 7%. Home furnishings and apparel remained roughly flat. Analysts caution that store renovations and assortment improvements can deliver short-term traffic and sales boosts, often moderating after two to three quarters. Georgy Vashchenko of Freedom Global noted that Target’s grocery changes have "materially improved the customer experience," a factor he cited as contributing to the recent performance gains.
