Swiss mobile operators Sunrise and Salt will jointly deploy and operate rural network infrastructure in a bid to match urban coverage quality and intensify competition with market leader Swisscom.
The collaboration will focus on extending and maintaining mobile networks in less densely populated areas across Switzerland, according to a joint statement. Both companies emphasized that their independent corporate structures will remain unchanged, with no merger or acquisition envisaged.
The initiative aims to address persistent disparities in network quality between urban and rural regions, ensuring that residents outside major cities receive service comparable to that available in metropolitan areas. Sunrise and Salt did not disclose financial terms, timelines, or specific technical details regarding the partnership.
The move follows a broader trend in the Swiss telecom sector, where operators increasingly explore infrastructure-sharing agreements to reduce capital expenditures and accelerate network rollouts. Swisscom, which currently holds the largest market share, has not indicated participation in the initiative.
