Sunshine Biopharma Inc. (NASDAQ: SBFM) reported progress on its K1.1 mRNA cancer program, demonstrating tumor-suppressing activity in preclinical models of hepatocellular carcinoma and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
The K1.1 program targets a tumor suppressor gene frequently mutated in several cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma, NSCLC, and pancreatic cancer. In animal studies, the lipid nanoparticle-based therapy restored the suppressed gene function in grafted liver tumors across at least two orthotopic mouse models, with dose-dependent effects. Laboratory tests also showed antiproliferative activity in multiple NSCLC cell lines. The company plans to pair K1.1 with a cancer vaccine targeting associated antigens for NSCLC treatment, aiming to convert immunologically inactive tumors into active targets.
Steve Slilaty, CEO of Sunshine Biopharma, stated that the results validate the company’s tumor suppressor restoration strategy. The company also develops a PLpro protease inhibitor for SARS coronavirus infections, while maintaining commercial operations in Canada where it markets 60 generic prescription drugs. Sunshine Biopharma intends to launch approximately 12 additional generic drugs by the end of 2026.
