Sagimet Biosciences shares rise on clinical trial update
Stock climbs after company provides positive interim data from mid-stage trial of lead candidate FASN inhibitor.

Sagimet Biosciences Inc. shares advanced on Tuesday after the biotechnology firm released interim clinical trial results for its lead FASN inhibitor candidate, driving investor interest in the mid-stage study.
The San Diego-based company said the interim data from its Phase 2b trial of S-2683, an oral fatty acid synthase (FASN) inhibitor, showed positive trends in efficacy and safety. The update follows a prior announcement that the trial met its primary endpoint, with the drug demonstrating statistically significant improvements in a key biomarker linked to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a severe liver disease.
Sagimet did not disclose detailed trial metrics in the statement, including patient enrollment numbers or specific efficacy measures. The company plans to present full results at an upcoming medical conference, though no date has been specified. Analysts noted that positive interim data often serves as a catalyst for biotech stocks, particularly in early-stage trials, where early signals of efficacy can drive significant share price movements.
The stock, which had been trading near multi-month lows ahead of the announcement, surged more than 20% in premarket trading before paring gains to around 15% at the market open. Volume was significantly higher than the 30-day average, indicating strong retail and institutional interest.
Sagimet Biosciences, which went public in 2021 via a $150 million initial public offering, focuses on developing treatments for metabolic and liver diseases. Its lead candidate, S-2683, is designed to target FASN, an enzyme implicated in the progression of NASH. The disease, characterized by liver inflammation and scarring, lacks approved therapies in the U.S., creating a potential market opportunity for effective treatments.
Investors will closely monitor the company’s next steps, including potential partnerships or additional trial expansions, as the biotech sector remains highly sensitive to clinical progress and regulatory milestones.
