The S&P 500 has confirmed a double top at 7,838.25, with the index trading at 7,673.25 in late Monday trading. The failure to sustain gains above the 7,700–7,750 resistance zone—anchored by the 20-day and 50-day moving averages and the Ichimoku cloud—reinforces the bearish technical setup.
Support levels are clustered near the 200-day simple moving average at 7,609.83 and the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement at 7,600–7,610. A decisive break below 7,660 could trigger a move toward the next support cluster at 7,600, with further downside targets at 7,535 and 7,464. The Relative Strength Index at 37.70 and declining volume underscore weakening momentum.
On the upside, a sustained move above 7,750 would be required to negate the double top and target the 7,838 resistance again, with additional resistance at 7,900. Traders eyeing a bullish reversal would need a close above the volume-weighted average price near 7,680 to validate upward momentum.
The technical deterioration coincides with a broader consolidation phase, with the index trapped in a choppy range between 7,650 and 7,690. Analysts note that a break in either direction could set the tone for the near-term trend.
