Russian equities retreated on Tuesday, with the MOEX Russia Index closing 4.18% lower. The benchmark gauge, which tracks the performance of the country’s largest and most liquid stocks, extended declines as investors weighed ongoing macroeconomic pressures and geopolitical uncertainties.
The broad-based selloff followed a week of volatility, with energy and financial sector stocks among the hardest hit. Heavyweights such as Gazprom and Sberbank contributed to the index’s decline, reflecting broader investor caution toward Russian assets. Trading volumes remained elevated, indicating active participation despite the negative sentiment.
The decline comes as Western sanctions continue to weigh on market sentiment, limiting access to international capital and restricting trade flows. Analysts noted that the absence of fresh policy measures or easing signals from authorities failed to offset the negative momentum. The ruble-denominated index’s drop underscores the challenges facing domestic investors amid a prolonged period of elevated risk.
