Reddit to join S&P 500, replacing AvalonBay Communities

Reddit Inc. is set to enter the S&P 500 index, replacing AvalonBay Communities Corp., effective after the close of trading on March 21, the S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on Friday.

The inclusion follows Reddit's strong performance in recent quarters, marked by a 174% year-to-date gain in its Class A shares as of Thursday's close. The company's market capitalization now exceeds $10 billion, qualifying it for inclusion under S&P's market-cap-weighted methodology. AvalonBay, a real estate investment trust specializing in apartment communities, will be removed from the index at the same time.

S&P Dow Jones Indices stated that the changes reflect the latest market valuations and sector adjustments within the S&P 500. The move is expected to prompt passive fund managers tracking the index to rebalance their portfolios, potentially driving additional demand for Reddit shares.

Reddit's inclusion comes after its highly anticipated initial public offering in March 2024, which raised $748 million at a valuation of $6.4 billion. The company has since expanded its advertising business and grown its user base, contributing to its improved financial metrics.

Analysts noted that the S&P 500 inclusion could enhance Reddit's visibility among institutional investors and improve liquidity in its shares. The adjustment will not affect AvalonBay's standalone operations or financial performance.

The final weighting of Reddit in the S&P 500 will be determined by its market capitalization relative to other constituents at the time of inclusion.
