Portugal’s PSI index closed 0.01% higher on Wednesday, lifting the benchmark to a three-month peak as gains in telecoms, consumer goods and utilities offset broader declines.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancers by 13 to 11 on the Lisbon exchange, with four issues unchanged. The index’s modest advance follows a period of consolidation after a sharp first-half rebound.
Among the largest gainers, Ibersol SGPS rose 0.78% to 10.38, while EDP Renovaveis added 0.29% to 13.81 and EDP Energias de Portugal gained 0.28% to 4.70. The gains were partially offset by losses in cork producer Corticeira Amorim, which fell 0.85% to 7.00, oil group Galp Energia, down 0.61% to 21.15, and diversified group Semapa, which shed 0.48% to 20.65.
Commodity markets showed mixed performance, with Brent crude for November delivery up 0.52% at $87.72 per barrel and U.S. crude for October delivery rising 0.53% to $82.80. Gold futures for December delivery fell 0.83% to $4,655.41 per troy ounce.
The euro held steady against the dollar, with EUR/USD little changed at 1.17, while EUR/GBP was flat at 0.86. The U.S. Dollar Index futures rose 0.24% to 99.08.
