Portugal’s PSI index ended higher on Wednesday, gaining 0.01% to reach a three-month peak at the close in Lisbon. The advance was driven by gains in the telecoms, consumer goods and utilities sectors, offsetting broader weakness across the exchange.
Advancing stocks slightly outnumbered decliners by 11 to 13, with four issues unchanged. The benchmark PSI index closed at its highest level since mid-May, reflecting selective buying interest in defensive sectors.
Among the top performers, Ibersol SGPS led with a 0.78% rise to 10.38, followed by EDP Renovaveis at 13.81 (+0.29%) and EDP Energias de Portugal at 4.70 (+0.28%). On the downside, Corticeira Amorim fell 0.85% to 7.00, while Galp Energia dropped 0.61% to 21.15 and Semapa declined 0.48% to 20.65.
Commodities showed mixed performance, with Brent crude for November delivery up 0.53% at $87.73 per barrel and U.S. crude for October delivery rising 0.55% to $82.81. December gold futures, however, fell 0.84% to $4,654.86 per troy ounce. The euro held steady against the dollar, with EUR/USD virtually unchanged at 1.17, while EUR/GBP was little moved at 0.86. The U.S. Dollar Index futures were up 0.24% at 99.08.
