A broad retreat in optical technology stocks has erased billions in market value over the past three months, prompting debate over whether the sector’s sharp pullback has created attractive entry points or foreshadows further declines.
Coherent, Lumentum, Corning and Ciena have all retreated from multi-month highs, with declines ranging from 20% to 45% since their 52-week peaks. Coherent’s shares have fallen 34% from their recent high, while Corning is down nearly 45% from its 52-week peak despite a 72% gain year-to-date. Lumentum, the sector’s standout revenue grower with 83% year-over-year growth, has still shed 20% from its 52-week high, even as its shares remain up 135% year-to-date. Ciena, which hit a June peak before entering a 40% correction, has fallen 38% from its high and 32% over the last three months.
The recent downturn accelerated last week, with Coherent down 17.6% in five sessions, Corning falling 13.5% and Ciena declining 11.1%. Technical indicators have turned uniformly bearish, with daily and weekly signals flashing "Strong Sell" across the group. Relative Strength Index readings for the four names sit between 44 and 53, suggesting limited near-term oversold conditions, while StochRSI signals point to short-term oversold territory on several issues.
Revenue growth remains robust across the sector. Coherent reported 22.5% year-over-year revenue growth, Corning posted 19.4% growth and Ciena delivered 30.6% growth. Lumentum, the sector leader, reported 83.2% growth. Forward price-to-earnings multiples remain elevated, with Lumentum at 35.6x, Corning at 45.2x and Ciena at 58.8x, though trailing multiples vary widely due to reporting timing and earnings volatility.
Analyst sentiment remains mixed. Rosenblatt lifted its price target for Ciena to $720, implying 82% upside from Friday’s close, citing expectations for $1.70 billion in revenue and $1.90 in earnings per share for the coming period—above consensus estimates of $1.63 billion and $1.72, respectively. Meanwhile, 18 analysts have raised estimates for Coherent and 20 for Lumentum, with consensus targets suggesting 34% to 39% upside from current levels. However, fair-value assessments from some firms still indicate downside potential, with Lumentum, Corning and Ciena trading 18.5%, 19.0% and 35.9% below respective targets.
Hedge fund positioning has also soured. Goldman Sachs data shows equity de-grossing accelerated last week, with technology names experiencing their largest percentage reduction in over two years. The trend coincides with Applied Optoelectronics’ announcement of a $600 million at-the-market equity offering in 2026, equivalent to 5.7% of its equity base—its third major dilution in the year.
The pullback has left the sector at an inflection point, with valuation disparities, mixed analyst outlooks and shifting hedge fund flows complicating the investment case for optical stocks.
