Shares of NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) settled at $223.36, down 0.23% on Sept. 9, as the company used the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference 2026 to underscore a shift in its fortune — one CEO Rafael Sotomayor said is being driven by the industry-wide push into "physical AI" and humanoid robotics.
"The market is coming to us," Sotomayor told analysts. "I think my job now as CEO is to make sure that we go to the market at the same level of speed. Not just to participate on this new phase of what's happening with edge devices, but just to lead."
NXP provided a revised third-quarter gross margin guide of approximately 50.5%, with operating margin expected to approach 37%. Both figures exceed prior expectations, reflecting what management called accelerating demand in its automotive and data center businesses.
Data center revenue is projected to rise to $500 million in 2024 from $200 million in 2023, with roughly 20% growth expected into 2025. In automotive, accelerated growth drivers — including software-defined vehicles, electrification, radar and connectivity — accounted for close to 50% of quarterly automotive revenue in Q2, growing at more than 20% annually.
Second-quarter revenue growth came in at roughly 20% year-over-year, excluding sensors. The company's stock currently trades at a P/E of 19.25 and a PEG ratio of 0.48, with a market capitalization of $57.12 billion and gross profit margins of 56.1%.
On its long-term targets, NXP reaffirmed a 2027 outlook of compounded annual revenue growth of 6% to 8%, gross margins of 57% to 63%, and operating margins of 34% to 40%.
Inventory management has improved, with internal inventory days decreasing quarter-over-quarter to 156 days. Channel inventory held steady at 11 weeks. The company is also shifting its manufacturing mix away from internal fabs toward external ones, moving from a 60/40 external-to-internal ratio toward 80/20, while backend operations remain 80% internal.
Robotics figured prominently in Sotomayor's remarks. He estimated the bill of materials for a Western humanoid robot at $1,500 to $4,000, with about 50% of that content addressable by NXP products. A humanoid robot contains roughly 100 to 300 joints, each requiring motor peripherals that fall within NXP's product portfolio.
"Intelligence for robotics is very similar to what happens in a human body," Sotomayor said. "It's not about one big brain; it's about having a hierarchical level of intelligence throughout the humanoid."
NXP also highlighted recent acquisitions supporting its physical AI strategy: Aviva Links for high-speed serial interfaces, Kinara for AI inferencing, and TTTech for real-time system solutions. The company's product roadmap includes zonal automotive products operating at 16 nanometers (such as the S32K5 family with embedded MRAM or flash) and central compute platforms at 5 nanometers, while data plane networking speeds are advancing from 400 gigabits to 800 gigabits and 1.6 terabits.
NXP holds a 10% stake in ESMC Dresden and a 40% stake in Vanguard, plus SSMC.
