Nvidia will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy Global, a renewable energy developer, as part of a broader agreement to supply infrastructure for OpenAI’s expanding data center operations.
The investment, announced on Friday, underscores Nvidia’s commitment to supporting AI workloads by securing long-term energy solutions. SB Energy will provide renewable power to OpenAI’s facilities, aligning with the tech giant’s sustainability goals while addressing the high energy demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Under the deal, Nvidia will take a minority stake in SB Energy, though financial terms beyond the $1.5 billion investment were not disclosed. The collaboration follows OpenAI’s recent agreements with other energy providers to ensure reliable and sustainable power for its data centers, which are critical to its AI model training and deployment.
Nvidia’s investment comes as the company ramps up hardware and software solutions for AI, including its latest graphics processing units (GPUs) optimized for large-scale data processing. The chipmaker has emerged as a key enabler of AI infrastructure, with its products central to the operations of major cloud providers and AI research firms.
SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, specializes in developing and operating renewable energy projects, including solar and battery storage systems. The company’s involvement in the OpenAI data center initiative highlights the growing intersection of technology and clean energy sectors.
Analysts note that the partnership reflects broader industry trends, where AI operators are increasingly prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainability to mitigate operational costs and regulatory risks. The deal also signals Nvidia’s expanding role beyond hardware into strategic investments that support the AI ecosystem.
