Nvidia has reportedly acquired Hugging Face, an AI model hub and open-source AI tools platform, in a deal valued at an estimated $150 million in run-rate revenue. The acquisition, described by analysts as a defensive move, seeks to protect the open-source AI ecosystem from potential control by major AI labs or hyperscalers such as Google, which could otherwise impede U.S. open-source AI development.
DA Davidson characterized the purchase as a strategic effort to preserve competition in the sector. The firm noted that both semiconductor companies and hyperscalers stand to gain from the continued expansion of open-source AI tools. The acquisition follows a pattern in which major tech firms have sought to consolidate key platforms, drawing comparisons to Microsoft’s 2018 acquisition of GitHub—an event that prompted Google to support GitLab as a rival platform.
Hugging Face, founded by three French entrepreneurs and now based in New York, operates as a central repository for AI models and open-source tools. The platform recently participated in an OpenAI-led security demonstration, collaborating with third-party researchers to expose vulnerabilities in AI systems. This initiative aligns with broader industry efforts by OpenAI and Anthropic to highlight AI safety concerns.
Anthropic has also partnered with Salesforce to increase token usage among enterprise clients, aiming to redirect Salesforce users away from open-source token alternatives. The moves underscore the intensifying competition among AI developers and platforms to shape the future of open-source AI infrastructure.
