MicroVision Semiconductor, a unit of Redmond, Washington-based MicroVision (NASDAQ: MVIS), has been selected by a government contractor to design a custom semiconductor solution for a photonics application, the company said.
The project centers on a liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator chip. MicroVision Semiconductor will supply custom analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit design capabilities for the effort, combining the contractor's polarization technology and photonics expertise with the unit's semiconductor design know-how. The company operates engineering centers in the United States and Germany.
Shares of MicroVision fell 1.97%, or $0.030, in intraday trading following the announcement.
MicroVision Semiconductor was established to commercialize the company's specialized semiconductor engineering capabilities beyond its core lidar and perception businesses, opening the door to advanced-technology markets that demand high performance, precision, power efficiency and reliability.
"MicroVision Semiconductor was created to turn decades of specialized semiconductor engineering expertise into a commercial capability that can serve customers across a range of advanced technology markets," CEO Glen DeVos said.
MicroVision's primary focus areas include lidar and perception solutions for industrial, security and defense, and automotive applications, including short- and long-range solid-state sensors and integrated hardware and software systems.
